Gapyeong: Nami Island, Rail Bikes, and the Easiest Day Trip From Seoul

Gapyeong is the day trip almost every Seoul itinerary should include: Nami Island's tree-lined avenues, a mountain rail-bike ride, and the storybook Petite France village, all within an hour or two of the city and easy to chain together. It's green, photogenic, and refreshingly low-effort — a train or bus gets you there, and a shuttle loops the sights. Here's how to do it without wasting the day on logistics.

Nami Island: the main draw

Nami Island (Namiseom) is a small half-moon island in the Han River, famous for its dead-straight avenues of metasequoia and ginkgo trees — the ones in every Korean-drama photo. You reach it by a short ferry (or a zipline, if you're brave), then wander tree tunnels, lakeside paths and art installations.

  • It's beautiful in every season: fresh green in summer, gold-and-red in autumn, bare and graphic under snow.
  • Rent a bike or just walk; the loop is flat and easy.
  • Go early to beat the tour groups to the famous avenue.

The Gapyeong Rail Bike

A few minutes away, the Gapyeong Rail Bike lets you pedal a four-person cart along a disused railway beside the Bukhan River, through a lit tunnel and past river scenery. It's gentle, fun, and a hit with families and couples. Book a time slot ahead on weekends — it sells out.

Petite France & the Garden of Morning Calm

Two more stops round out the day:

  • Petite France — a cluster of colorful French-style cottages on a hillside (a "Little Prince" theme), kitschy and very photogenic, and a drama/variety-show filming favorite.
  • The Garden of Morning Calm — a large landscaped garden, spectacular during the autumn foliage and the winter light festival.

Pick one or both depending on your energy; they're near each other on the shuttle route.

How to get there and get around

  • Train: the ITX-Cheongchun from Seoul (Yongsan/Cheongnyangni) reaches Gapyeong Station in about an hour as of 2026; the slower Gyeongchun subway line is cheaper.
  • Gapyeong City Tour shuttle bus loops the main sights (Nami, rail bike, Petite France, the garden) for a flat fare — the easiest way to connect them without a car.
  • Nami's ferry wharf, the rail bike, and Petite France are all shuttle stops.

Don't try to cram all four sights in. Nami plus the rail bike is a relaxed full day; add Petite France only if you start early. Rushing Gapyeong defeats the point.

How to do it

  1. Take the ITX-Cheongchun to Gapyeong, early.
  2. Ferry over to Nami Island and walk the tree avenues before the crowds.
  3. Hop the city shuttle to the Gapyeong Rail Bike (pre-booked slot).
  4. Add Petite France or the Garden of Morning Calm if you've got time.
  5. Head back on an afternoon/evening train.

Booking your train and the rail-bike slot ahead on weekends keeps the day smooth.

Gapyeong is the rare day trip that's genuinely easy and genuinely pretty. Keep the plan loose, lead with Nami Island, and let the shuttle do the connecting.
