Namhae is a rural island county off the south coast, stitched together with terraced hillsides, quiet coves and a pace that slows you down whether you planned it or not. Few foreign visitors make it here, which is a large part of the appeal.
The one sight to build a trip around is Gacheon Darangyi, where rice paddies step down the hillside in green terraces all the way to the water. After that, see the German Village built by Koreans who worked in Germany and came home, and climb to Boriam hermitage for the sunrise. Namhae pairs neatly with Tongyeong and Geoje if you want a longer south-coast loop.
What to see and do
- Gacheon Darangyi Village — rice terraces dropping in steps to the sea, one of the best coastal landscapes in the country. Bring good shoes; the paths are steep.
- German Village (Dogil Maeul) — a hillside of European-style houses built by returning emigrants. A bit kitsch, but the sea views are real.
- Boriam Hermitage — a cliffside temple on Geumsan with sunrise views over the islands. Go early and expect company on New Year's.
- Sangju Eunmorae Beach — a crescent of fine silver sand backed by pines, and the county's best swim.
- Namhae coastal drive — cafes and sea views strung along the shore road, worth an unhurried afternoon.
What to eat
Namhae runs on myeolchi (anchovies). Try them as hoe or in a jjigae, and don't skip the local yuja (citron) products. Shellfish comes straight out of the coves, so order it fresh at a harbor-side spot.
Getting around
Namhae is an island reached by bridge. The usual route is KTX to Jinju and a connecting bus, but a rental car makes the trip far easier: the coastal road, the terraces and the beaches are all spread out and awkward to reach without one.
When to go
Late spring through autumn is the sweet spot for green terraces and beach weather. The paddies are at their greenest in early summer and turn gold just before the autumn harvest.
Insider tip
Plan your timing around the light. Sunrise at Boriam and sunset over the Gacheon terraces are when the paddies and sea glow, and both are easy to miss if you're wandering on a full stomach at midday.
